Assessment Tests 2021/22

Froebel House School Assessment Test Summary 2021-2022

What is a standardised score?

When a child takes a test, they have a raw score i.e., 25/30 which is then put into a formula that takes the child’s age into consideration and in turn, provides a standardised score. The average mean score for both numeracy and literacy nationally is 100, with the standard deviation being anywhere from 85-110, with 2/3rds of the population falling anywhere within this bandwidth. The consensus amongst educators is that on the back of the pandemic, 100 is an inflated mean score and in reality, is substantially lower.

Why are our results so significant?

The results above have demonstrated our children are making definitive progress and are performing very well compared to national averages. The results show that when children arrive in Reception, they are very much below expectations and within a year, are above the average mean score and this continues throughout the school, year on year, until they graduate in Year 6.

I think it’s important to note that all teacher’s at Froebel mark the students work each and everyday and use multiple forms of formative and summative assessments throughout the year to determine how a child is doing and the standardised assessments are a benchmark only.

In many ways standardised testing is a data point and nothing else. We are very much aware that many facets of the child’s educational journey are not measured through a standardised test and are equally, if not more important, than the progress and attainment markers standardised testing gives us. It’s a component of our overall annual assessment along with many others.
